This Cookie Policy (this "Policy") describes what EMAssistant ("EMAssistant," "we," "us," or "our") stores in your browser when you visit our website at https://emassistant.com/ (the "Site") and when you use the EMAssistant web application, and how you can control it. We have tried to describe this exactly as it works rather than in general terms, so that you can check it against what your browser actually shows.

Cookies and the alternatives to them

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser so it can remember something between page loads or visits. Two related technologies do much the same job: local storage, which persists until you clear it, and session storage, which your browser discards when you close the tab. Unlike cookies, neither one is attached to the requests your browser sends, so they stay in your browser until the page's own code reads them. This Policy covers all three, because what matters is what is stored and why, not which mechanism holds it.

What the marketing site stores

The pages of this Site — everything outside the web application — store the following. None of it is a cookie:

An anonymous analytics ID (local storage) - A random identifier that lets us count returning visits without knowing who you are.
The current visit (session storage) - An ID for this visit plus how you arrived at the Site, discarded when you close the tab.

These are ours alone. They are not shared with any advertising network or outside analytics company, and they are not used to follow you across other websites. What we do with the resulting data, and how long we keep it, is described under "Website Analytics" in our Privacy Policy.

hCaptcha on our forms

Our Contact and account deletion pages use hCaptcha to check that a submission comes from a person rather than an automated script. This is the only third-party code on the Site. It loads from hCaptcha's own servers, which means hCaptcha receives your IP address and browser information and may store data in your browser under its own domain to remember that you passed a challenge. We do not control what hCaptcha stores or how long it keeps it — see hCaptcha's privacy policy. hCaptcha loads only on those two pages; browsing the rest of the Site does not contact it.

What the web application stores

If you sign in to the EMAssistant web application, it stores a few things so that it can keep you signed in and remember how you left it:

Sign-in tokens (local storage) - Your authentication tokens, kept in local storage so that a single sign-in works across every tab you have open. Signing out removes them.
Preferences (local storage) - Which organization you last had selected and your light/dark theme choice.
Sidebar state (cookie, sidebar:state) - Whether you left the navigation sidebar expanded or collapsed. This is the one true cookie we set, it holds nothing but that setting, and it expires after 7 days.

Clearing these will sign you out and reset those preferences, but nothing else is lost — your account and your organization's records live on our servers, not in your browser.

What we do not do

We do not run advertising, and we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. We do not use Google Analytics or any other third-party analytics service. We do not use web beacons or tracking pixels, and we do not sell or share what we store with data brokers. There is no advertising-industry opt-out to point you at, because there is nothing of that kind on this Site to opt out of.

How to control what is stored

Everything above is under your control through your browser, with no setting to request from us:

Clear it - Clearing cookies and site data for emassistant.com erases all of it. The analytics ID is regenerated as a brand-new random value on your next visit, with no connection to the old one.
Block it - You can block cookies and site storage for this domain in your browser's privacy settings, or browse in a private/incognito window, which discards everything when you close it.

Blocking storage on the marketing site costs you nothing — the pages work exactly the same, and our analytics simply counts each visit as a new one. Blocking it for the web application will prevent you from staying signed in, because the sign-in tokens have nowhere to live.
